How to set-up your Windows 95/98 computer

 

FIRST CHECK

To see if you have the 32 bit dialer installed on your computer. Or if you are switching to wyenet.com and have been using another ISP, scroll down to SETUP.

INSTALLING THE 32 BIT DIALER

To use the 32 bit dialer with Windows 95, it must first be installed. To be sure it is installed, follow these steps:

From the Desktop, select "My Computer"

  • Open CONTROL PANEL
  • Select NETWORKING

The Network Configuration window displays the networking components currently installed. If a dial-up adapter is currently installed you do not need to set a new one up.

If no dial-up adapter is present one needs to be installed before internet access is available. Following these steps:

  • Click the ADD button.
  • Select ADAPTER, click ADD.
  • On the left, select MICRSOFT
  • On the right, select DIAL-UP ADAPTER
  • Click OK
  • Click OK
  • Restart Computer

The system may require the system CD or diskettes (depending upon your version of Windows) to install the dial-up adapter.

TCP/IP INSTALLATION & CONFIGURATION:

To access wyenet.com you must configure your TCP/IP Network Protocol

  • Double click MY COMPUTER
  • Select CONTROL PANEL
  • Select NETWORK
  • If the TCP/IP protocol is not installed click on ADD
  • Select PROTOCOL and click ADD
  • Select MICROSOFT on the left and TCP/IP on the left
  • Click OK
  • Click OK
  • In the NETWORK CONFIGURATION MENU highlight TCP/IP
  • Click PROPERTIES
  • Click on IP ADDRESS
  • Select Obtain IP Address Automatically
  • Click on for WINS RESOLUTION
  • Select DISABLE Wins Resolution
  • Click on DNS CONFIGURATION
  • Select ENABLE DNS
  • Click on "Host" dialog box. Enter YOUR LOG-ON NAME
  • Click on ADVANCED
  • Select SET THIS PROTOCOL TO BE DEFAULT PROTOCOL
  • Click OK
  • Click OK
  • Restart computer

The system may require to copy some files from the system CD or diskettes (depending upon your version of Windows).

ADDING WYE NET TO DIAL-UP NETWORKING

  • Double click MY COMPUTER
  • Select DIAL-UP NETWORKING (when window opens you may be prompted automatically for Dial-up info. If so, skip to next step)
  • Double click MAKE NEW CONNECTION
  • Enter "wyenet.com" click NEXT
  • Enter valid dialup number to dial into.
  • Click NEXT
  • Click FINISH
  • You will return to the Dial-up Networking window. Point at the "wyenet" icon and with the right mouse button CLICK ONE TIME
  • A menu will appear, select PROPERTIES
  • Select SERVER TYPES
  • Ensure PPP; Windows 95, Window NT appears for TYPE of Dial-up Server
  • Advanced options should include Enable Software Compression and Log onto Network
  • Allowed Network Protocols should include ONLY TCP/IP
  • Click on TCP/IP Settings button
  • Select Server Assigned IP Address
  • Select Specify Name Server Address
  • Tab to Primary DNS and enter "38.9.213.2"
  • Tab to Secondary DNS and enter "38.9.223.2"
  • Use IP Header Compression and Use Default Gateway on Remote Machine should be selected.
  • Click OK
  • Click OK
  • Double click on the wyenet.com icon now in dialup networking. A box will appear asking you for your username and password
  • Type your username in the box with an ix/ in front of it (i.e. you choose bob as your username when you go to enter this in for your dialup username - simply put ix/bob)
  • Then type your password in the box below it
  • Click save password
  • Hit Connect

CONFIGURING YOUR E-MAIL

When configuring your e-mail, there are several steps to make it functional. Messages over 30 days old will be deleted from the host server. If you wish to keep a record of your e-mail, copy to a folder on your hard drive.

  • Name on Account: "your name"
  • e-mail address: "your-username(without the /ix)@wyenet.com"
  • POP3 user name: "your-username (without the /ix)"
  • Password: "password registered with WYE net"
  • Incoming mail server: "wyenet.com"
  • Outgoing mail server: "wyenet.com"

Start Netscape (Version 3)

  • Click on EDIT
  • Select PREFERENCES
  • Select MAIL SERVER
  • Deselect Leave messages on mail server if it is checked

Start Netscape (Version 4)

  • Click on OPTIONS
  • Select MAIL & NEWS
  • Select SERVER
  • Deselect Leave messages on mail server if it is checked

Internet Explorer

  • Click on VIEW
  • Select OPTIONS
  • Select SERVER
  • Deselect Leave messages on mail server if it is checked
